Baseball dominates Orono for season sweep

The baseball team (7-3, 7th in Class 2A) dominated Orono 11-1 on Friday night at Lion’s Park, their second win against the Spartans in a week. Along with their 12-9 victory at Orono High School earlier in the week, this gives the Fire a season sweep of their conference rival.

The Fire hit very well this game, with strong individual performances from sophomore Eric Rinzel (2-3, 2RBI, 1HR), junior Chris Thedinga (3-4, 2RBI) and senior Tom Mahota (1-1, 2BB, 2R). Brady Richter (HR) and Trey Cavello also chipped in 2 RBI a piece.

In addition to their strong offensive performance, senior Michael Jensen pitched a complete game 3-hitter with 9 strikeouts and O earned runs.

This win is the Fire’s third in four games, with their only loss coming in an extra-inning heartbreaker away to New Prague, 6-5. The Fire hope to continue their momentum in the coming week, knowing they face two very difficult opponents.

This afternoon, they take on the undefeated Waconia Wildcats, who currently sit at 12-0 and are ranked #1 in Class 3A. First pitch is set for 4:30pm at Lion’s Park in Victoria.

Then, on Tuesday, they take on the Hutchinson Tigers, who currently sit at 7-0 in the Wright County Conference. The Tigers edged the Fire 9-7 at Hutchinson High School in late April, so the Fire will be looking to avenge the loss. First pitch is at 5:00pm at Lion’s Park in Victoria.
