Homecoming win moves Fire to 3-0

The football team extended its winning streak with a 35-14 victory over Watertown-Mayer on Friday night. The Homecoming victory bumped the team up to #4 in the Class 3A rankings.

Junior Sam Riegert scored on a 1 yard touchdown run to start off the scoring for the Fire. Watertown-Mayer tied up the game on a 22 yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. This was as close as they’d come, as Holy Family pulled away with three consecutive touchdowns, highlighted by a 59 yard touchdown run by junior QB, Jacob Zay. The first half ended with a score of 28-7.

The second half was a defensive battle, with each team scoring a single touchdown.

Jacob Zay (111 yds rushing) and Sam Riegert (3 TDs) led the way offensively, while Dominic Phillips (13 total tackles) and Nick Hendler (10 total tackles and a fumble recovery) had standout defensive performances.

When asked about the victory and the team’s #4 ranking, Kevin Schepers said, “It feels rewarding since we put in the hard work, but we aren’t going to let the numbers get to our head. Even though we are placed at fourth in our class, we won’t define ourselves by that. We’ll define ourselves by how hard we work and the time each and everyday that we put in.”

The team hopes to extend its win streak to four against the Delano Tigers this week. “We need to finish the game strong and not give up in the third quarter. We only won our first two games by 3 points, so we need to make sure we perform to the best of our ability,” Ty Hanneson said, looking forward to this weekend’s contest, “Last year they came back from being down 28-7, so we need to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Kickoff is slated for 7pm at Delano High School.
