My Top 10 Favorite Movies of the Year

2017 has finally come to a close and it has been a great year for movies. Out of the 36 movies I have seen this year, these are my 10 favorites.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Spiderman Homecoming

A charismatic performance from Tom Holland, great high school humor and a convincing villain from Micheal Keaton makes Spiderman Homecoming one of the most fun movies of the year.

It Comes at Night

A beautifully shot psychological thriller with great performances and a subversive, nuanced story.

Logan Lucky

Filled with great performances from the whole cast, Logan Lucky is an amazing heist movie from start to finish with well-timed humor and a surprising amount of heart.

Wind River

With strong performances, beautiful cinematography and good writing and direction from Taylor Sheridan, Wind River is an obscure murder mystery film worth checking out.

10. Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan’s WW2 film is a visual masterpiece. From the cinematography to the practical effects it is all flawless. The story is also told in an interesting and unorthodox way. Christopher Nolan avoids war cliches by purposely under-developing the characters.

9. Get Out

Superbly written by Jordan Peele, Get Out manages to be unsettling, funny, and have effective social commentary simultaneously. With great performances from Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, Jordan Peele’s directorial debut is not to be missed.

8. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is an excellent coming of age film with insightful and hilarious writing from Greta Gerwig. The performances are very strong, especially from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. The film is relatable and moving.

7. Good Time

Good Time is an incredible, fast-paced thriller from the Safdie brothers. The movie features an amazing performance from Robert Pattinson. The neon-drenched cinematography and score are highlights as well.

6. The Disaster Artist

The Disaster Artist features a career-best performance from James Franco as the strange Tommy Wiseau, while also being a hilarious, inspiring, and heartfelt journey about the making of The Room.

5. The Shape of Water

Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water is an adult fairy tale about being incomplete with wonderful performances from Sally Hawkins and Micheal Shannon. Del Toro’s masterful cinematography and set design are as strong as ever.

4. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has terrific writing from Martin McDonagh and perfectly interjects dark comedy. The acting from Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand is amazing and the movie is thoroughly entertaining.

3. Baby Driver

Baby Driver is one of the most rewatchable films of 2017. Edgar Wright’s heist film is perfectly edited to the beat of a fantastic soundtrack. The cast is great and the car chase scenes are some of the best in recent memory.

2. Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 is a rare sequel that surpasses the original. Roger Deacon’s cinematography is jaw-dropping and the sound editing is perfect as well. The cast delivers incredible performances. The story is layered with thought-provoking themes.

1. Logan

This was my most anticipated movie of the year and it completely blew me away. Hugh Jackman turns in his best performance as Logan. Patrick Stewart gives the best performance of his career as Charles Xavier. The action in Logan is brutal and everything I have wanted to see in a Wolverine movie. It packed a large emotional punch that so often has been missing from movies from the Marvel X-Men Universe.
