Girls Soccer Celebrates Seniors With Win Against New Prague
On Thursday night, girl’s soccer played their last regular season game against conference opponent New Prague. With section seeding already determined the team played with one goal on their mind, celebrate their seniors. Junior Maggie Rothstein was asked what their seniors mean to the program: “They are great role models and lead the team on and off the field”. You can tell the respect that the team has for the seniors who have provided great leadership this year in the girls historic season.
From the start of the game, the fire looked to attack quickly getting some quality shots right off the bat until Junior Caitlin Rock opened up the scoring with a goal off an assist by Senior Captain Paige Wicka in the 18th minute of the contest. A few minutes later Junior Ella Haley added to the score with a goal from far out. Just a short time after that, she put in a second goal off a free kick at the top of the box with a minute remaining in the first half.
The fire did not let up in the second half. Paige Wicka scored 3 minutes into the half off an assist by Senior Sheillah Aoko. The Holy Family girls dominated in possession most of the second half taking many shots. They had a great chance to score a fifth goal off a PK by Senior Ashley Pass but the New Prague Goalie made a brilliant diving save. The final score was Holy Family 4 and New Prague 0.
After the game Senior Captain Grace Murphy, a five year player in the program, had this to say about what her time as part of the team meant to her: “Being a part of holy family soccer for the past five years has been an incredible experience and I am blessed to have played with many great people throughout my time in this program”. It’s obvious that this is a very close team who has high hopes to go far in the playoffs this year after finishing with the best regular season record in school history at 10-4-1.
Seniors honored during the game include Shelliah Aoko, Brielle Bornhorst, Grace Murphy, Ashley Pass, Erin Schneider, Maria Torborg and Paige Wicka. Watch them and the rest of the team on October 11th at Holy Family for the first game of sections.
