The Punisher: Season 2 Review
The Punisher Season 2 sees a return to form for Frank Castle as the Punisher (Jon Bernthal). After the events of last season, Frank is trying to lay low in a small town, but he can’t seem to resist when he sees a girl (Giorgia Whigham) being followed by some suspicious looking characters in a bar. As Frank helps her, it turns out that there is a bigger conspiracy going on than what seemed and now Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) returns as well, acting even crazier than last season, but with no recollection of what happened to him. Frank now has to deal with a war on two fronts and hopefully come out alive.
I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 of The Punisher and it is one of my favorite Netflix original series. Season 2 definitely has it’s moments, but I don’t think it lives up to the standard of the first season. There were a few things I didn’t like as much this season. The story seemed like it was trying to go to many directions and I think they should have just focused on one thing or made it more like the first season where the stakes seemed higher and it seemed like Punisher had a reason for well…punishing people and not just because he looks cool. Also, Frank doesn’t really develop as a character and he is basically just a grunting animal who is always angry and takes out his anger on others. Finally, the plot felt a little unsatisfying at the end and I think it could have probably been done better. There were a lot of things I did enjoy though. I thought the action was really well done for the most part and I couldn’t help getting happy every time Frank would get into another fight. The acting was also very good for most of the characters. Ben Barnes I think had a breakout performance because of the way he portrayed a confused Billy Russo out for vengeance against something he doesn’t even know about yet. Also, I thought that some characters were interesting such as John Pilgrim (Josh Stewart) and the outcasted veterans that wanted to get back at society for casting them aside and seeing the return of some characters was cool as well.
I think that I would recommend The Punisher season 2 for fans of the first season but don’t go in expecting a step up, also if you haven’t watched the first season yet do your self a favor and watch it cause it’s one of the best action driven TV series I have ever seen.
