2019 Summer Movie Preview

The summer movie season has begun with releases like Avengers Endgame and Detective Pikachu now playing in theaters. So I decided to look ahead for all the other great movies coming out this summer

John Wick Chapter 3- Parabellum

Release Date: May 17th

The John Wick franchise is without a doubt the best action movies Hollywood has produced in a long time. The first film delivered incredible action and set up a unique and interesting world for the criminal underbelly of the movie to inhabit. The second film upped the ante with larger scale action and even more world building. If the 3rd can do the same, I’m sure we’re in a for a treat.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters

Release Date: May 31st

Godzilla from 2014 was a film I did not like nor enjoy. I found the effects work to be solid, but the story and characters were lacking, so I am hopeful for the 2019 sequels to step up its game. King of the Monsters is introducing a bunch of other monsters from the Godzilla lore like King Ghidorah and Mothra. The movie looks like an insane monster fighting, city-destroying thrill ride and I cannot wait to see it.

Toy Story 4

Release Date: June 21

Why is this happening? Well money, obviously, but Dinsey wrapped the Toy Story trilogy so well in 2010 and it seems ridiculous to bring it back now 9 years after the fact.

Yesterday

Release Date: June 28th

Danny Boyle’s film Yesterday tells the story of Jack a struggling musician who magically becomes the only person who remembers the Beatles or their music.  This fantastical concept is gold and hopefully, the film can deliver a great music-filled story. Many famous celebrities are slated to appear such as Ed Sheeran, Kate McKinnon and James Corden.

Spider-Man Far From Home

Release Date: July 2nd

Spider-Man’s second solo MCU film sees him go on a fun summer trip to Europe with his classmates and friends, but of course, Peter gets pulled away from his friends because of his wall-crawling alter ego. Spider-Man Homecoming is one of my favorite MCU entries and I cannot wait how Jon Watts continues the returning characters’ stories. Add in my favorite actor Jake Gyllenhaal in a mysterious, perhaps villainous role and you got me excited.

Midsommar

Release Date: July 3rd

Ari Aster’s feature film debut Hereditary was one of my favorite films from this past year, so obviously I cannot wait to see what he delivers next with Midsommar. The film’s eerie first trailer sets the scene of a young woman going a summer vacation to a small Swedish village during some summer festivities. Things will mostly like go awry and I will most likely be scared outta my mind.

The Lion King

Release Date: July 19th

I love the original Lion King. It is one of the greatest movies of all time. It’s essentially perfect. The fact that Disney is remaking it is just ridiculous to me. The film is using visual effects technology to create realistic looking lions, but the great thing about the original is the character designs. The Lions had big eyes and ears and could emote and express their emotions so the audience could understand how they were feeling. How are you supposed to get emotionally attached to a real lion? The original Lion King looks incredible on the big screen (I saw it in a theater recently) what is the point of making it again if you are going to make it look less visually interesting. The remake has a great cast with the likes of Donald Glover, Beyonce, Seth Rogen and more, but even the stellar cast can’t even get me excited.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Release Date: July 28th

Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite directors. This is his first movie since 2015. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio in his first movie since his Oscar win in 2014. It’s a 60s period piece set is the Golden Age of Hollywood also starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and more. Have I mentioned it was shot on 35mm film. Yeah, this might just be my most anticipated movie of the summer.

Good Boys

Release Date: August 16th

This movie looks absolutely hilarious. Just watch the trailer.
