Holy Family Baseball Looks to Make a Section Tournament Run

Section 5AA Playoffs Recap

Opening Round

In the opening round of the Section 5AA playoffs, Holy Family’s baseball team squared off with Minneapolis North at Diethelm Park in Victoria.  The Fire, who are the second seed, defeated Minneapolis North by a score of 19-1.  One key contributor was Spencer Lewin, who had a six-RBI performance.  Danny Reddan also accounted for three hits and four RBIs.  Thomas Aragon Meznel had two hits as well.  In total, the Fire had 17 hits.  Caden Pottebaum, Danny Schneider and Grant Limke, were on the mound for the Fire.  They combined for a two-hit shutout.

Second Round

In the second round, the Fire faced Rockford, who defeated Maranatha Christian/West Lutheran by a score of 12-1.  The Fire defeated Rockford earlier in the year on Friday,  March 1 by a score of 2-0.  The Fire scored four first-inning runs and added four more when the lead narrowed to two.  Ultimately, the Fire were able to defeat Rockford by a score of 8-2.  Patrick Barrett threw six innings, and Casey Gess finished off the game in the seventh inning.  Barrett and Gess held Rockford to three hits.  Barrett, Spencer Lewin, Jacob Konz, and Bryce Richter each collected two hits.  Richter had a team-high of three RBIs.

Third Round

The Fire are one of four teams remaining in the winners bracket.  On Wednesday, May 29, the Fire took on the third seed, Providence Academy, at Vollmer Park in Glencoe.  The Fire defeated Providence Academy earlier in the year on April 25 behind a two-hitter from Caden Pottebaum.  The Fire rallied from behind to tie the game at 4.  Bryce Richter got out of a jam with the bases loaded and no outs.  Ultimately, the Fire won by a score of 5-4 and were able to advance on a walk-off RBI by Danny Reddan.  The Fire, who are now 13-6-1 overall, will face Glencoe-Silver Lake, which upset the top seed, Litchfield.
