Whether it’s yard work, packing food, or sorting clothes at thrift stores, there’s a way for everybody to get involved. On Tuesday, April 23, Holy Family students participated in service day, a Holy Family Tradition in which all students and teachers take part in. On this day, all students and faculty volunteer for 3-4 hours at non-profit organizations in the Twin Cities area. Service Day is a way for students to grow in faith, community, and leadership while representing the school.
Service day not only helps the community, but it helps students grow as a person too. Senior Gabby Kapke says, “I went to Arc Thrift Store and helped fold and organize clothes. When we were done, the workers were so gracious for our work because we put them ahead of time by a day and a half. This made me realize how much work it can be to maintain a thrift store and it makes me more grateful for thrift store workers and all workers in general.” Students are becoming more aware of all the hard work it takes to maintain and run a business, non-profit organization, or church. Senior Keenan Olsen says, “I went to St. Victoria Church. While we were there, some people worked outside doing yard work and some worked inside, cleaning windows. After cleaning for a couple hours, I realized just how much work has to be put in to maintain a big building like the church. I was so proud to help and serve the community.”
Service day was a big success. Students and faculty served the community, grew in faith, developed leadership skills, and most importantly, felt accomplished for all the good work they’ve done for others.
