Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Gypsy+Rose+Blanchard

Ten years of her life were spent in federal prison for second degree murder for the death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Meet Gypsy Rose, a now 32 year old who just got released from prison in late December of 2023.

When Gypsy was growing up her mom lied to her saying that she had serious illnesses. She told Gypsy that she couldn’t walk and made her be in a wheelchair her whole life. Gypsy wasn’t actually unwell, her mother had been lying about her symptoms. Experts believe Dee Dee’s behavior stemmed from the mental disorder Munchausen syndrome by proxy which made her fabricate her daughter’s ill health in order to receive attention and sympathy for taking care of a sick child.

Once Gypsy became a teenager she realized that her mother was lying about these illnesses and she was fine. At night Gypsy would sneak out of her room and go onto the family computer and talk to a guy she had met online. She told him the truth about her family and she ended up asking him if she could kill Dee Dee so they could be together. In June 2015 he came to the house and stabbed Dee Dee.

Once Dee Dee was dead Gypsy started posting on Facebook about her mom, so people would find the dead body. Many people wondered why Gypsy had to go to such extreme lengths to get away from her mom. Gypsy responded, “I couldn’t just jump out of the wheelchair, because I was afraid and I didn’t know what my mother would do. I didn’t have anyone to trust” (Biography). Gypsy was sentenced to ten years in prison for second degree murder, but only served eight years. When Gypsy was released from prison she was asked if she had any big plans coming up. She responded, “Lots of ’em” (Today).
