How to Get Involved This School Year

As fall activities come to an end, you might wonder what to do with all of your free time? Consider joining a fall sport or club. Although they may look different due to COVID-19, here are some activities you can get involved in this winter.

Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a competitive club where you get appointed a fake situation in court. Everyone is assigned a different role, including a lawyer, a witness, a timekeeper, and more. This year’s captain Lauren Taylor says, “It’s a great way to argue in a healthy way and it’s not a huge commitment.” Due to Covid-19, they are expecting to be online this year instead of going to different schools to compete. Keep an eye out during convocation for more information on how to join.

Honors Society

Honors Society is an organization that requires 20 hours (due to COVID-19 the required amount for this semester was reduced to 10 hours) of community service and a GPA of 3.5 or higher. National Honors Society is a great way to help your community and school. It looks really good on college applications, as well! For more information, see the Honor Society page and see Mr. Dueck with questions.

Knowledge Bowl

Knowledge Bowl is a fun activity where teams participate in academic quiz-like competitions. If you’re interested, talk to Mr. Walker.

Math League

In Math League, you compete against other schools and answer math problems. Holy Family did really well last year, placing first in all of their regular season competitions. We also placed third in state last year. Talk to Mr. Kannel if you want to know more!

Latin Club

If you take Latin here, or speak it and want to get more practice, join Latin Club. Actually, join it even if you’re not in Latin. Meetings are held after school and talk about all things Latin, including foods and culture. Listen during convocation to know when the meetings are!

Nordic Skiing

Nordic skiing, also known as cross country skiing is a fun and easy to learn sportKenzie Pavelka says, “Everyone should join Nordic or at least come see what it’s about! It is a super fun way to hang out with friends while getting in a little exercise.”

Winter Dance

If you’re a dancer or are interested in dance, join the Holy Family Dance Team. The dance team won second place in state for our section last year. The Holy Family Dance Team is a great way to make more friends and improve your dance skills.

Basketball

Holy Family offers both boys and girls basketball programs. If you are looking for a fun and fast-paced sport you should consider joining the basketball team. In order to allow for the basketball season to happen, several COVID-19 guidelines must be followed, including limiting the number of fans that attend the games. Even though the fan section will look a little different this year, still be sure to cheer on the boys and girls basketball teams!

Joining clubs and sports are a great way to get involved in the school community and meet new people. So do it.
