With prom and graduation around the corner, Holy Family decided to raise awareness by presenting a mock car crash to the students. This model was executed with precision and importance, giving a demonstration that included many first responders, as well as actors, many of whom attend Holy Family. Having an opportunity to speak with them, we were able to hear the impact of the mock crash and how they felt participating in it from their personal perspective. Through this, we were able to gain more knowledge and understanding, and it helped us to be more careful on the roads.
When we were able to speak with the participants, they said how impactful the crash was, and how they hoped it would influence others to make the right choice. With the ability to speak with junior Meg Hamilton, one of the actors in the crash, she gave an insight saying, “It was really impactful to experience firsthand the devastation that a car crash can cause,” as well as, “The pain that would be caused in a real situation is unimaginable.” She gave a picture of how just a single experience can shift your perspective, and could even save a life.
Senior Evie Domyahn, another actor, helped explain the emotional weight of a crash and how it not only affects you, but the people in your life. She said, “My mom and I are really close, so to even hear her sound desperate and sad was hard, even though she was acting,” and later said, “With my mom there, the reality of how it’s important to be really careful in these situations spoke to me.” These words helped to focus on how one small choice can leave a huge impact on your life, and everyone surrounding it. Many students can reflect on their family and understand the stress that can come from a severe accident.
Overall, there is such a large impact that the mock crash was able to show the Holy Family, not just to the participants, but also the students and staff members who were able to view it. It was an inspiration for students to talk and reflect about the consequences of drunk driving, and highlight the hope for them to recognize the size of their responsibility when they are behind a wheel. The devastation that could be caused because of distracted driving can be lasting for family, friends, first responders, and even yourselves. Because of the opportunity, we have to give a large thanks to Mrs. Larson, Mr. Burg, and all others who were involved in presenting this mock car crash to Holy Family. With this as an example, it can change the course of a life or death event, and give recognition to the responsibility drivers need to maintain.
