With the two weeks of May Term marking the conclusion of another school year, students reflect on the impact of May Term and which classes stood out as favorites!
One of the most popular classes was Baking and More. Year after year, baking remains one of the most in demand May Term classes. Since spots fill up quickly, often baking is more of a junior dominated class since juniors get first access to May Term registration for classes. Baking is a 2 period class that offers students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of baking while making various treats such as cookies, bars, cakes, breads, and more. You will often see the students in Baking walking around the school distributing free treats to others!
May term classes related to sports such as Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Lifelong Sports also drew attention from students. In these classes, students were able to refine their athletic skills while having the opportunity to compete with their classmates in more of a relaxed environment. These classes gave students the opportunity to stay active throughout the day and participate in some friendly competition!
Another fan favorite among students was the outdoor based courses. In courses such as Outdoor Cooking and Outdoor Surthrival, students emphasized the importance of being able to transition from the classroom to outside learning, especially with the arrival of nice weather! In Outdoor Cooking, students had the opportunity to learn how to grill burgers, steak, fish, and more! In Outdoor Surthrival, students learned essential skills such as starting a fire, building shelter, tying knots, and working together to solve real world challenges.
Art-based classes also appeared to draw interest from students. Classes such as Spring Pinterest, Upcycling, Knitting, and Sewing allowed students to learn new hobbies while exploring creativity! Many students in knitting and sewing described how before taking the May Term class, they had no prior experience with knitting or sewing, but were quickly able to learn and develop interest!
Another standout class included Medicine in Entertainment. In this course, students watched medical drama series such as Grey’s Anatomy and ER and analyzed the accuracy of the various medical procedures or practices. Students were able to gain a better understanding of the impact that the media has on life today.
